About the program

This comprehensive program offers you the opportunity to broaden your perspective on salient organization management responsibilities and skills.

This program enables you to leverage your existing career and educational experiences to move into management positions. You will take a series of carefully selected business courses that will build and enhance your skills in critical areas of management such as finance, marketing, human resources, and leadership. These courses are designed to enhance your employability and career advancement.

Program outline

To be considered, applicants require a 2-3 year post-secondary diploma or degree.

Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must achieve the minimum requirements of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6 issued in the past 24 months. Duolingo score of 120+.

Exemptions may be granted to students who have completed at least 3 years of formal academic studies in which English was the medium of instruction. Students can also satisfy the English language proficiency requirement by successfully completing the EAP program offered by Hanson Language School. All applicants can be asked to obtain a minimum score on Hanson International Academy’s English Placement Test before final approval of their application and completion of their registration.

Semester 1

Accounting for Non-Financial Managers (ACC7300, 4 credits)

In this course, students will explore the uses of accounting and finance information as required by managers in directing the affairs of business organizations. Managers require this information to plan operations, measure performance, control activities, and make effective decisions in order to achieve the firm’s objectives. In this course, students will concentrate on cost behaviour, budgeting, and the use of managerial accounting information for decision-making purposes.

Managerial Economics (MOG1001, 3 credits)

This course may be delivered in a variety of different formats: 100% in-class, 100% online (or a blend of both), videoconferencing, distributed learning or off-campus. Please confirm with your faculty member which format will be used for your section of this course.

Financial Decision Making (MOG1002, 4 credits)

In this course, students will examine the goals and objectives of financial management with an emphasis on decision making. Students will evaluate data to prepare estimates, apply working capital management techniques, evaluate sources of short-term financing, calculate value and rate of return, and calculate the cost of capital.

Managerial Communications (MOG1003, 3 credits)

In this course, students will learn the importance and relevance of different forms and methods of business communication. The students will also be able to learn different methods and techniques used in formal and informal business communication and be able to select and apply an appropriate communication methodology in each business situation. Special emphasis will be placed on developing appropriate business language skills (spelling, grammar, punctuation, voice, and tone).

Business Ethics and CSR (MOG1004, 3 credits)

In this course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact of business decisions on various stakeholders by analyzing the theories revolving around the concepts of corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability, and business ethics.

 

Organizational Behaviours & HRM (MOG1005, 4 credits)

In this course, students will learn how organizational behavior and human resources are related to organizational effectiveness. This course will examine different personality types, leadership styles, communication styles, and group dynamics. The importance of an organization’s vision, mission, and values will be examined to demonstrate the need to hire employees for fit. Having the right team in place will lead to a high performing team that shares goals, innovation, and diversity. Other topics of study will include procedural and distributive justice, the purpose of human resources management, the importance of culture and climate and how human resources influences both. Tools including job analysis, behavioral based interviews, performance evaluations, and quality work life frameworks will be discussed and examined.

 

Semester 2

Marketing Strategy (MOG1006, 4 credits)

In this course, students will be developing a strong understanding of how to build, evaluate, and execute marketing plans that help build business. The focus will be on frameworks used to analyze market situation and creating a marketing plan from the point of view of not just the marketing managers but any manager who needs to support a broader business plan of the organization.

Data Analysis Using Excel (MOG1007, 3 credits)

In this course, students will use Microsoft Excel for organizing and analyzing data assuming little functional or just peripheral knowledge of spreadsheets. The students will be able to demonstrate the application of Excel spreadsheets in making effective presentation of data as well as in carrying out some basic statistical analysis used in everyday business decision making.

Business Strategy (MOG1008, 4 credits)

In this course, students will focus on the concepts and frameworks that are used in formulating, analyzing and executing business strategies. The students will learn how to analyse a firm’s competitive position, identify managerial challenges, developing alternative plans, and analyzing consequences of those plans while focusing on creating value for shareholders.

New Venture Creation (MOG1009, 4 credits)

In this course, students will be exposed to the various aspects of entrepreneurship including, but not limited to, business idea generation, feasibility analysis, creating a business plan, conducting market research, exploring financial structure, and legal aspects of starting a new venture in Canadian context. Students will prepare a business plan to apply the knowledge they will gain in this course.

Negotiation and Leadership (MOG1010, 3 credits)

In this course, students will be exposed to and apply negotiation theories as a tool of conflict resolutions. The course will provide students experiential learning environment where student will learn how to apply the skills in different situations varying from simple buyer-seller bargaining to a more complex bargaining group environment.

Legal Aspects of Business (MOG1011, 3 credits)

In this course, students will provide students with an understanding and appreciation of the legal environment in the Canadian business context. The focus will be on the legal framework that impacts regional business practices.
